LOD - Level of Detail

LOD - Level of Detail

LOD stands for Level of Detail. It is the perceived measure of graphical as well as non-graphical information contained within an element in a BIM Model.

There exist various definitions and interpretations of the term LOD in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry.

Every element in a BIM Model can be As-designed or As-built.

  • As-designed elements are the ones created from scratch in BIM or referred from other design sources e.g. drawings. The purpose of these BIM model elements is to aid construction or installation in the real world.

  • As-built elements are created inside the BIM model using reality capture sources e.g. a laser-scanned point cloud or a Red marked up drawings. The purpose of these BIM model elements is to represent an already existing object from the real world in BIM.

You can set a diverse LOD in planBIM for settings like:

  1. 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500

  2. 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5

The option of setting LOA gets enabled when the LOD is set at 500 or 5 (depends on the setting).
